Injuries Can Be Prevented

Injury is the leading cause of death and disability for children over one year of age.

Recognizing the significance of injury to the health of children and the public health of the community, the Children and Families Commision of Orange County (CFCOC) has determined that an integrated quality service system focused on the reduction of child death and disability due to preventable causes of injury will contribute to children growing up in healthy and safe environments.

The "Keeping Children Safe" program is a comprehensive injury prevention tool designed to help educate parents about the most frequent causes of injury to children age 0-5 years and prevention strategies. The program consists of 26 "vignettes" which demonstrate a "wrong" and "right" way to protect a child from injury.

The causes of injury that are demonstrated in the program, as well as the appropriate educational messages associated with each cause were developed as a result of feedback from local multidisciplinary injury prevention experts. Additionally, the program was reviewed by focus groups of parents of children age 0 to 5 years to test the understanding of the scenarios, the clarity of the educational messages, and the overall "likability" of the product. Parents representing the diversity of cultures in Orange County were represented in the focus groups.
